The Thai Navy Seals were called in to save them.

When the kids were discovered — alive, on a dry patch inside an otherwise flooded chamber inside one of the largest cave systems in the country — Saman was one of the divers transporting food and supplies their way.

But on one trip, he went down and didn’t surface:

“Saman wasn’t responding,” said his dive buddy. “I dragged him to chamber three, where we tried to revive him—” he choked up, “but he was gone.”

Years later, Saman’s wife appeared in a documentary called The Rescue. She was asked to talk about her husband.

You know what she said?

“Generosity,” she said, “is the beginning of everything.”

Then she cried.
