The day you become a good copywriter...

You’ll know you’re good.

You’ll know you’re good because a few clues will give it away…

1. You won’t get writer’s block...

Good copywriters don’t get blocked. They just get started.

The more you write, the better you’ll understand the factors (e.g., the timing, the setting, the circumstances) that make up your writing routine and motivate you to get going.

That said… writing, the act itself, will not get easier. Meaning, it’ll never become automatic. Writing will always be a process, a cycle of thinking, doubting, deciding; thinking, doubting, deciding; thinking, doubting, deciding.

But putting yourself in the right mood and mindset to START that process can become automatic—and that’s half the battle when it comes to writing.

Remember: “You don’t start, you don’t ship!”

Onward.

2. You’ll think in benefits, not features…

Because features tell and benefits sell.

Remember: Copywriters sell for a living!

Onward.

3. Your writing will go unnoticed...

In other words, the reader won’t think about your turn of phrase.

She won’t think:

  • “Oh, I love that opener!”

  • “Oh, those bullets are so compelling!”

  • “Oh, that headline really grabs my attention!”

Your copy will go unnoticed because it’ll be overshadowed by the message it’s working to articulate.

Remember: The message should come through while the words fade to black.

Onward.

Becoming a good copywriter won’t happen immediately, but it will happen suddenly.

And when it does happen, I can’t stress how important it is to do this one, simple thing:

Trust yourself.

Don’t second guess your creative instincts. You earned them!

So make your decision—trust it—and move onto the next word, the next sentence, the next paragraph, page, post, project, presentation.

Look. If you’re a good copywriter and the copy sounds good to you after two or three proper editing rounds, it probably is.

All you can do now is test it.
