It’s Friday, late. I walk into my bedroom.

Sydney’s on the bed. I lay next to her and put my cheek against hers. Her tail starts moving up and down.

I kiss her once. Muah.

Twice. Muah!

3 times. MuuuuuuuuuuuAHH!

Her tail keeps moving. I smush her face between my palms and touch her forehead to mine. She licks my nose.

Muah.

Muah!

MUUUUAH!

3 more on the head!

But why 3?

Don’t know. It just feels right, satisfying and comforting and rhythmic.

Always has...

(3 little pigs.)
(3-ring circus.)
(3 miles in a league.)

Always will…

(Mind, body, and spirit.)
(Blood, sweat, and tears.)
(Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.)

Sets of 3 are everywhere.

They’re baked into our culture, nature, and brain chemistry…

The Rule of 3 states that ideas and stories presented in 3s are easier for our brains to understand and remember. Copywriters take note: whenever possible, your copy should present 3 bullets, benefits, steps, whathaveyou.

Whatever it is, make it a set of 3.

That’s the magic number. Don’t present information in 2s or 4s. Those numbers, consciously or otherwise, make it harder for the reader. Harder to focus and remember, harder to care.

Something to keep in mind next time you’re creating a promotion.
